HOW TO BECOME A GOOD GUITARIST
Being a good guitarist means knowing a lot about guitars. To know more about guitars is to read more about guitars.
“OK,” you might be saying, “but what can I do to become a good guitarist?” Here are some ideas:
Motivation - make a plan
I think one of the most important factors in becoming good at almost anything is, Motivation. How do you get motivated? How do you stay motivated?
1. Set your goals
2. Make a plan on how to reach and achieve them
3. Look at your plan often, let it inspire you to work harder
Learn chords and scales
Learn the basics. Scales and chords are in a way the basics of playing guitar. Learn them well, because they give you a good foundation in creating your own tune on the guitar.
Practice
Practice makes perfect. I suggest you practice more on your weaknesses. Always play the things you find difficult, and you will get better at playing them. Practice often, try to play a bit every day, and practice different things (dare to risk). For example, you could practice scales for half an hour, take a break and practice chords for another half hour. Very simple
Idolize
By idolizing, you are letting yourself be affected by whom you idolized. A friend of mine keeps himself interested in guitars by idolizing famous guitarists like Paul Gilbert (of Mr. Big), Slash, Jimi Hendrix, etc. Idolizing keeps you in the right track of your game plan. Who knows, you might outshine your idol someday.
Take lessons
Take a few lessons from a teacher (a good one) with good reputation, and don’t hesitate to tell your teacher what you want to achieve. Telling your teacher about your goals and game plan will make teaching and learning easier and more effective for both parties.
Have your own Guitar
Tony Hawk won’t be a good skater if he didn’t have his own skates. It is also the same with guitarists. Guitarists must have their own weapon, which is of course their own guitar. If you have your own guitar and gadgets, you can practice more. The more you practice, the more you become perfect. Thus, having your own guitar is a big help.
