There is a lot to consider when buying a good guitar.
Here are the important issues:

What kind of music do You want to play?
  • It is hard to play rock and roll on a classical guitar.
  • If you just want to strum a few chords and accompany yourself while you sing at home,  get an acoustic guitar.
  • If you want to play guitar in church,  get an acoustic electric guitar.
  • If you want to play in a rock band get an electric guitar.
  • In general the electric is easier to play and the most versatile.  But you will also need an amplifier.

What is your budget?
  • The biggest mistake beginners make is to get a cheap guitar.  They think that IF they get good THEN they will get a good guitar.
  • The cheap guitar is hard on the fingers.  It does not want to stay in tune.  It sounds bad and is not any fun to play.
  • Pretty soon the student gets discouraged and quits.
  • A good guitar is easy to play, stays in tune,  and is a TOTAL joy.
  • Plan on spending AT LEAST $300 for a decent guitar.  If you try to get one cheaper you will only end up going back and getting another guitar later.
